Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic and political crisis. Emergency has been imposed for the fourth time in 4 months. Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency. He has taken this step considering the situation in the country.

The Rajapaksa government imposed a state of emergency on April 1 for the first time in a pauperized Sri Lanka. The state of emergency was lifted on 5 April. On May 6, the state of emergency was again imposed till May 20. Emergency was declared for the third time on 13 July 2022.

Why the situation worsened in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is going through the most severe economic crisis since its independence in 1948. The foreign exchange reserves here are almost empty. The country is unable to import essential things. The prices of daily necessities are sky high, there is a crisis of food items and fuel is also not easily available. Due to all this, the common people of Sri Lanka took to the streets and demonstrated against the government.

People's protests started in March over power cuts. Four months later, public anger overthrew the Rajapaksa family from power.

Food crisis at 60 lakhs

Recently the World Food Program reported that six million people in Sri Lanka are facing a food crisis. Due to the acute shortage of foreign currency in the country, the government is not able to import even the necessary imports from abroad. There is such a shortage of fuel that people have to wait for two days to get petrol and diesel filling.
