A side effect of Russia-Ukraine: the threat of darkness over Uttarakhand, lack of power supply

The effect of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is also visible in Uttarakhand. There is a shortfall in power supply in Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) itself has accepted this. UPCL MD Anil Kumar held a press conference on Monday at the Energy Corporation headquarters.

He said that at present the electricity demand is going above 40 million units while the general availability of electricity is around 27 to 29 million units. He said that because of the war between Russia and Ukraine, gas has become expensive and supplies have also been affected.

Hence the supply of electricity from gas-based power plants has also stopped. Power plants of Uttarakhand are also closed due to the cost of gas. Due to this, the shortage in the national exchange is also increasing continuously. He said that on average, UPCL has to buy 10 million units of electricity every day.

Electricity will not be sold for more than Rs 12

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has banned the arbitrariness of power producers. UPCL has also gotten relief from this. According to the information, CERC has made it clear that the maximum price of electricity on the National Exchange can be charged only Rs 12 per unit. Till now, according the peak hour, many producers were selling their electricity for up to Rs 20.

Relief from the deduction for the time being

Energy Corporation management says that at present, electricity is being available against the demand of about 40 million units. There was a demand of around 37.5 million units on Sunday. On Monday also, UPCL had made complete arrangements. UPCL's SE said that arrangements have been completed for Tuesday as well.
