Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Assam on a one-day visit on Monday, where he inaugurated several development projects. He first inaugurated Batadrava, the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva, in Assam's Nagaon district. Batadrava has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs 227 crore. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Rameswar Teli, and State Culture Minister Bimal Bora were present on the occasion. Amit Shah was initially scheduled to arrive in Guwahati from Ahmedabad on Sunday night, but his flight was delayed due to fog, and his visit was postponed to Monday.
Inauguration of the redevelopment project of the birthplace of the Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva
The Home Minister began his Assam visit by paying tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Movement against illegal immigrants at the 'Shaheed Smarak Kshetra' (Martyrs' Memorial Area) in Guwahati. Upon reaching Batadrava, the Home Minister was accorded a traditional welcome by 'Gayan-Bayan' (singers and drummers). Shah also visited the central building at the saint's birthplace, where the 'Guru Asana' (seat of the revered saint) is kept. The decision to redevelop this site, named 'Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Avirbhav Kshetra', was first proposed in the 2021-22 state budget.
The project is designed to make the site not only a historical landmark but also a major tourist destination. It showcases the life, ideals, and artistic legacy associated with Mahapurush Sankardeva and the broader cultural traditions of the state. Sarma said that this project (Avirbhav Kshetra), while honoring the legacy of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, strengthens "our commitment to preserving Assam's satras, namghars, and cultural heritage."
'PM Modi is following the call of One India.'
Addressing a public meeting at Bordurwa, Amit Shah said that the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva has been freed from encroachment. The Vaishnava saint Srimanta Sankardev had called for a 'United India,' a vision that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now pursuing.
He will inaugurate the ICCS Center in Guwahati, which will strengthen security arrangements.
Afterward, Amit Shah will return to Guwahati, where he will inaugurate the new Rs 111 crore building of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate and the Rs 189 crore Integrated Command and Control System (ICCS) to strengthen the city's security. The ICCS will monitor over 2,000 CCTV cameras in Guwahati to strengthen security and emergency response systems in the state. Before departing for New Delhi in the evening, Shah will also inaugurate the Rs 291 crore Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex in Guwahati. This complex includes a 5,000-seat auditorium.
