
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a cold wave in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan for the next few days. It also stated that dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan during the morning hours between January 8 and 10. Dense fog is also expected in several areas of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, fresh snowfall occurred in the higher reaches around Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The national capital recorded a cold day for the second consecutive day. The cold wave in the plains led to severe cold conditions, affecting daily life.
In Kashmir's Doda district, a large number of tourists gathered on the Bhaderwah-Pathankot highway at Guldanda (9,555 feet), Panj Nallah (10,200 feet), and Chattargalla (10,500 feet) to enjoy the snow-covered mountain views. Many tourists from across the country described the snowfall as amazing.
The national capital recorded a cold day for the second consecutive day. The maximum temperature was 16.7 degrees Celsius, which is 2.3 degrees below the normal average. The weather department has predicted dense fog here on Thursday morning and issued a yellow alert. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 16 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Meanwhile, temperatures dropped below five degrees Celsius in some parts of Haryana and Punjab. Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 7.6 degrees Celsius. Bathinda in Punjab was the coldest place in the state, with a minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius.
State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said that, considering the health and safety of children and staff, the winter holidays for schools have been extended until January 13.
In Rajasthan, the cold wave also disrupted normal life, with cold day conditions recorded in several places. The minimum temperature ranged between 4.5 and 10 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state. Dense fog was observed in some parts of Jaipur, Kota, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, and Udaipur in the morning, reducing visibility to near zero and affecting traffic on highways. Sikar was the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius.
