Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a tour of Jammu and Kashmir today. During this, he will meet the families of those killed in the recent terror attack in the Rajouri district. Apart from this, a high-level meeting will also be held regarding the security situation in the wake of targeted attacks on Hindu families in Jammu.

It will be attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and heads of all intelligence agencies. This is Shah's second visit to Jammu and Kashmir in the last three months. In October last year, the Home Minister visited Rajouri and addressed a public meeting.

Terrorist attack in Dangri, Rajouri on 1st and 2nd January

On January 1 and 2, seven Hindu civilians, including two children, were killed and several were injured in two terror attacks in the Dangri village of Rajouri. After these attacks, more than 2,000 paramilitary forces have been sent to Rajouri. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the Dangri terror attacks. The government has revived the Village Defense Committee in Rajouri and a large number of people are being given new rifles to guard against possible terror attacks.

Top leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Arun Kumar and BL Santosh, have held several meetings in Jammu to discuss the overall security and political situation in the Union Territory. BJP is demanding to strengthen the Village Defense Committee. There are 28,000 Village Defense Committees in the Jammu region and most of the members who have been given weapons are Hindus.

VDC was established 30 years ago

The Village Defense Committee (VDC) was established in the Doda district about 30 years ago when the law and order situation in J&K had broken down and terrorist attacks on villagers in the hilly areas had increased. Eventually, the security forces took control of the situation and the role of the VDC was reduced, but now again people are demanding to activate the VDC.
