Manipur: 'First arrest today, the death penalty can be given to the culprits', CM on the incident of making women parade without cloth

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has taken a tough stand on the incident of two women being paraded without cloth in Manipur. He has spoken of taking the strictest action against all the criminals. The CM informed that the first arrest in the case has been made this morning. At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the CM regarding the incident.

 

Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said that soon after the video surfaced, the state government took suo motu cognizance of the video and ordered an inquiry. He said that the Manipur Police took action and made the first arrest this morning. At present, a thorough investigation is going on in the matter. We will ensure that strict action is taken against all perpetrators, including the possibility of the death penalty.

 

Shah's order

Amit Shah spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday. The Home Minister is understood to have directed the Chief Minister to take strict action against those involved in the May 4 incident. Sources said Shah asked Singh to take all possible steps to nab all those involved in the incident and take appropriate action as per law.

Manipur is in the grip of ethnic violence these days, but now tension has spread in the hilly areas of Manipur over a video in which two women are being paraded without cloth. According to reports, the video is from May 4 and both the women are from the Kuki community, while the men who are parading the women without cloth are all from the Meitei community. The tribal organization Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum has demanded action against the culprits.

According to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, the incident took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, about 35 km from the state capital Imphal. At the same time, no one has been arrested by the police in this case. It can be seen in the video that the men are continuously molesting the helpless women who are crying and begging them to leave.
