West Indies' legendary all-rounder Andre Russell has retired from international cricket. The 37-year-old all-rounder played the last two matches of his career in two T20s against Australia. Although he could not do anything special in this series, it is now certain that his strong hitting will not be seen in international cricket. Due to this, he also got many names... like 'Russell Muscle', 'Russell Power'... etc. Russell chose the first two matches against Australia because both matches were played at his home ground, Sabina Park. Australia won both matches. The Kangaroos have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Russell's performance in the last match
Russell scored 36 runs in 15 balls with the help of two fours and four sixes in his last international match. Apart from this, he also bowled one over and conceded 16 runs. At the same time, in the first T20, Russell scored eight runs and conceded 37 runs in two overs while bowling. Russell played one Test, 56 ODIs, and 86 T20 matches for West Indies. He has two runs and one wicket in Tests. At the same time, in ODIs, he scored 1034 runs at an average of 27.91 and a strike rate of 130.23, while also taking 70 wickets at an average of 31.84. His best batting performance was 92 runs, while his best bowling performance was four wickets for 35 runs. In T20 Internationals, he scored 1122 runs at a strike rate of 163.80 and also took 64 wickets. His best bowling performance was three wickets for 19 runs, and his best batting performance was 71 runs. Since 2019, Russell has been playing only T20 for West Indies.
Has won the T20 World Cup for West Indies twice
This 37-year-old player was part of the West Indies team that won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. However, Russell's real flair has been seen in the T20 league. He will continue to play T20 leagues. Russell has been a part of T20 leagues around the world. Including international cricket and league, he has scored 9,360 runs in 563 matches at a strike rate of over 168. During this, he scored two centuries and 33 half-centuries. 121 not out is his best score in T20. In T20, he has taken 485 wickets as a bowler, including best figures of 5/15.
West Indies Cricket had expressed gratitude.
West Indies Cricket had written on the announcement of Russell's retirement, 'Thank you, Dre Russ! From becoming a T20 World Cup champion twice to your amazing power for 15 years inside and outside the field, you played for the West Indies with all your heart, passion, and pride. West Indies salutes you!' At the same time, Russell said, 'Words cannot explain their meaning. Representing the West Indies is one of the proudest achievements of my life. When I was a kid, I didn't expect to reach this level, but the more you start playing and love the game, you realize what you can achieve. This motivated me to become better because I wanted to leave my mark in maroon and be an inspiration to others.'
What did Russell say?
Russell said, 'I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends, where I get a chance to showcase my talent and perform high-quality performances. I want to end my international career by becoming a role model for the next generation of cricketers from the Caribbean countries.' Russell has retired just seven months before the next ICC T20 World Cup to be held in February 2026, to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Russell is the second high-profile retirement from West Indies in recent times. Recently, the team's young batsman Nicholas Pooran retired from international cricket. He said goodbye to international cricket at the age of 29.
Russell's record, which is difficult to break
Actually, in the year 2011, India toured the West Indies. Then in the ODI held in North Sound, Andre Russell batted at number nine and scored an unbeaten 92 runs. In his innings of 64 balls, he hit eight fours and five sixes. During this, his strike rate was 143.75. 92 not out is the best individual score among players batting at number nine or lower in ODI cricket. After him comes Ravi Rampaul of West Indies, who scored an unbeaten 86 off 75 balls while batting at number 10 in the ODI in Visakhapatnam in 2011. This record made by Russell in ODIs can hardly be broken by any player batting at number nine or below.
Russell played his last ODI in 2019. Since then he has been playing only T20 for West Indies. Even though he is not playing ODIs, his strike rate in this format is better than everyone else. Russell's career strike rate in ODIs is 130.22, which is the best. After this comes Glenn Maxwell. He scored runs at a strike rate of 126.70. The top Indian player in this list is Yusuf Pathan. He scored runs at a strike rate of 113.60.
