Gangtok/Siliguri, Jan 8 (IANS) The army was deployed Thursday to rescue at least 2,700 tourists stranded at Changu in Sikkim following heavy snowfall, officials said.
While most of the stranded tourists who got caught in the snowfall and rains Wednesday have now been rescued, around 250 are still in the affected area.
The soldiers are providing food, shelter, woollens, and medicines to the tourists.
"We have rescued at least 200 tourists including women and children from Changu," said Col. Samir Bhalla of the 33 Corps.
Sikkim police sources said there was snowfall in Changu, Serathang, 15 Mile and Babamandir on Thursday too. The route to Babamandir and Nathula is still closed.
A weather expert said the rains and snowfall were triggered by westerly winds.
