The first bilateral meeting between PM Narendra Modi and the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Prof. Mohammad Yunus, took place in Bangkok on Friday. As expected, PM Modi openly raised the issue of attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh after the removal of PM Sheikh Hasina from power in August 2024.
It is the responsibility of the Bangladesh government to stop attacks on minorities - PM Modi.
PM Modi bluntly said that it is the responsibility of the Bangladesh government to stop attacks on minorities and hoped that the Yunus government would fulfill this responsibility. PM Modi also advised that provocative speeches that sour bilateral relations should be avoided.
The meeting was organized at the request of Bangladesh.
Yunus also raised the issue of extradition of former PM Hasina, who is living in India. Bangladesh offered to renegotiate the Ganges River water sharing and Teesta River water agreement. Both PM Modi and Yunus have gone to Thailand to attend the BIMSTEC summit. The meeting was organized at the request of Bangladesh.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said about the meeting between the two leaders that the situation of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh was discussed. PM Modi put this issue openly and expressed deep concern.
The issue of elections in Bangladesh was also raised.
Yunus was told that such issues affect the rest of the society. Modi expressed hope that the Bangladesh government will fulfill its responsibility and investigate every case of violence in detail. The issue of elections in Bangladesh was also raised by PM Modi in this meeting. Modi shared his thoughts on this with Yunus and expressed hope that a democratic, inclusive and progressive Bangladesh will be formed in the future. Elections will play an important role in this.
PM Modi told Yunus to avoid provocative speeches.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said that PM Modi told Yunus that provocative speeches that spoil the atmosphere in bilateral relations should be avoided. It is believed that he said this in the context of the comments made by Yunus and some ministers of his interim government on the situation in the northeastern states of India.
The Indian PM also said that there is a need to strictly follow the law and order to stop illegal movement on the border of both countries. Describing it as necessary, he also talked about finding a way out by holding a meeting between the concerned agencies of both countries soon.
PM Modi said that the issues should be resolved through discussions.
In the end, PM Modi also expressed hope that whatever tense issues are there between the two countries, they can be resolved through mutual discussions in a cordial atmosphere. On the other hand, it was informed from Bangladesh that Yunus told PM Modi in detail about the violent methods adopted by former PM Hasina to crush the student movement.
In this context, a report from the United Nations Human Rights Council was cited, which said that between July 15 and August 5, 1,400 people were killed in Bangladesh. Of these, 13 percent were children. The report also said that Hasina herself had instructed the security forces to kill the protesters.
Yunus talked about the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.
Yunus also asked about his government's request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. He also said that Hasina is poisoning the atmosphere by making false and provocative statements against the interim government. By this, she is also disrespecting the hospitality given by India. The Indian government should ban her statements.
Yunus presented an old photo to Prime Minister Modi.
According to ANI, Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus on Friday presented an old photo of himself with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this photo, Prime Minister Modi is seen presenting a gold medal to honor Yunus at the opening ceremony of the Indian Science Congress in Mumbai on January 3, 2015.
