November 26, 2025... A day in Indian cricket history that fans will likely never forget. The second Test match played in Guwahati unfolded in a manner no one had imagined. Team India, considered the strongest team on its home turf, completely crumbled against South Africa.
India suffered a crushing defeat by 408 runs in the second Test, and with that, South Africa achieved a historic victory by sweeping the two-match Test series 2-0. South Africa, shattering India's greatest pride, achieved the same feat it had accomplished 25 years earlier.
It should be noted that South Africa has become the first team to clean sweep India at home twice. Previously, in 1999-2000, South Africa defeated India 2-0 in a Test series.
IND vs SA Test Series: Home fortress collapses
The second Test of the two-match Test series between India and South Africa (India vs South Africa Test Series 2025) was played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The result of this match came on the fifth day of play. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. In the first innings, South Africa was all out for 489 runs.
In the first innings, Senuran Muthusamy scored 109 runs off 206 balls for South Africa, including 10 fours and 2 sixes. This was the first century of his international career. Marco Jansen also scored 93 runs. For India, Kuldeep Yadav took 4 wickets, while Jadeja, Bumrah, and Siraj each took two wickets.
In response, Team India was all out for 201 runs. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal managed to score more than 50 runs in India's first innings. Yashasvi scored 58 runs. Washington Sundar also scored 48 runs. Sundar, along with Kuldeep Yadav, added 72 runs for the eighth wicket, helping India reach a respectable total. Marco Jansen took six wickets for South Africa, while Simon Harmer took three wickets. South Africa had a 288-run lead in the first innings and chose not to follow on.
Batting in the second innings, South Africa declared after scoring 260 runs, setting India a target of 549 runs to win the second Test.
But Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer bowled brilliantly, bowling India out for 140 in the second innings and securing a 408-run victory. This is India's biggest defeat overall in Test cricket and by a margin of 140 runs at home. Previously, India had lost to Australia by 342 runs in Nagpur in 2004.
Moreover, this is the second time in 13 months that India has been clean-swept in a Test series at home by a team. Previously, in October-November 2024, New Zealand defeated India 3-0 in a three-match Test series. This defeat is also embarrassing in terms of the World Test Championship.

Relying on all-rounders over Test specialists was a huge advantage.
Home conditions and despite a favorable pitch, the Indian team lost the two-match Test series (IND vs SA Test Series). Coach Gautam Gambhir has faced widespread criticism following India's defeat. He is being accused of selecting the team based on T20 cricket in red-ball cricket, leading to setbacks for the Indian team in the longest format.
Since Gambhir became India's coach, India has lost four of eight Tests at home. Gambhir's coaching tenure began with a strong victory against Bangladesh in the two-match series at home last year, but New Zealand subsequently defeated India 3-0 at home for the first time. However, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, India fielded Test specialists in the series, but despite this, they still suffered defeat. Team India then lost 1-3 in the BGT series in Australia and drew the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy in England 2-2.
It's worth noting that coach Gambhir played four specialist batsmen in each Test against South Africa. Yashasvi, KL Rahul, and Dhruv Jurel played in both Tests. After captain Shubman Gill was injured in the first Test, Sai Sudarshan came in for the Guwahati Test. However, all four had poor performances. Yashasvi was the only batsman to score a half-century for India in the second Test.
