Concerns are being raised all over the world about human rights violations in Bangladesh, but the Bangladesh government does not seem to be taking any concrete steps. 1. Members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagran Manch on Thursday took out a protest march to the office of the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Kolkata in protest against the atrocities being committed on the Hindu community in the neighboring country and the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmay Krishna Das.

 

2. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the situation in the state assembly on Thursday (28 November 2024) and said, "No religion should be harmed and any incident that ends in violence due to religion is condemnable. She is saddened by these incidents, but the Bengal administration and her party have a limited role in this. It is hoped that the central government will end the unrest by talking to Bangladesh. We will support every decision taken by the Center."

 

3. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on Thursday. He briefed PM Modi on the ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Sources told India Today that Jaishankar had returned from Italy after attending the G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting from 24 to 26 November.

 

4. After the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, questions are also being raised about ISKCON in Bangladesh. There has been a demand to declare it a radical organization. But amid all this, ISKCON Bangladesh on Thursday distanced itself from Chinmoy Krishna Das, saying that his actions do not represent the religious institution."

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, ISKCON Bangladesh General Secretary Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari said that Lilaraj Gaur Das, head of Prabhatak Sri Krishna Mandir, Gauranga Das, and head of Sri Sri Pundarik Dham in Chittagong Chinmoy Krishna Das were removed from their posts and all organizational activities within ISKCON due to breach of discipline.

 

6. The Bangladesh High Court on Thursday refused to issue a suo motu order to ban ISKCON's activities in the country. The decision came despite a petition from a Supreme Court lawyer and calls for such action from student groups. The court said that necessary action had already been taken in the matter. The court expressed hope that the government will remain vigilant in the protection of law and order, including atrocities on minorities, especially Hindus.

 

7. United Kingdom Conservative MP Bob Blackman has targeted the Bangladeshi interim government over the attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh after the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office in August this year. On Thursday, the MP wrote on X, "I condemn the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the imprisonment of Chinmoy Krishna Das. Freedom of religion must be protected globally. I am also concerned about the High Court's attempt to rule that ISKCON should be banned from the country. We have fought for the freedom of Bangladeshis and we cannot allow any government there to oppress minorities."

 

8. Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday condemned the murder of a lawyer in Chittagong and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and demanded his immediate release. Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after violent protests in August, has accused the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus of widespread human rights violations.

 

9. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday described the arrest of Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Das and reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh as "serious and disturbing". Speaking to the news agency ANI, Shashi Tharoor said, "All Indians are concerned about the well-being of our neighbor. It is not just the Ministry of External Affairs but all Indian citizens who are concerned about these reports."

 

10. The Indian government strongly objected to Chinmoy's arrest two days ago and urged Dhaka to ensure the safety of minority communities, including Hindus. However, Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry has expressed displeasure over what it said was India's interference in its internal affairs.
