More than 150 people were injured in an accident caused by firecrackers during a festival at a temple near Neeleshwaram late on Monday (28 October) in Kerala. Eight people were seriously injured in this incident. Police said that the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Kasargod, Kannur, and Mangaluru.
This incident took place at the Juthambalam Veerarkavu temple after midnight on Monday. During this time more than 500 people had come to the temple to participate in the traditional Theyyam festival.
Eyewitnesses told the reason for the incident
Regarding this incident, eyewitnesses said, "This accident happened when the spark from the firecrackers fell on other firecrackers kept in a room of the temple, causing an explosion. According to officials, one person is in critical condition and eight are seriously injured. In total, 154 people have been injured in this explosion and subsequent stampede. Out of these, 97 people are admitted to various hospitals.
According to the information, the temple management had kept light firecrackers worth about Rs 25,000 for the festival, which was to end on Tuesday night. A young woman injured in this incident said that as soon as the spark fell in the firecracker room, everyone started running. She said, I and some other people fell and we got injured, but my sister survived safely.
MLA M. Rajagopal expressed grief
Local MLA M. Rajagopal called this incident very unfortunate and spoke to the District Collector. He said that the firecrackers were light, but the spark fell on another room. The firecracker fell on the firecrackers, causing the accident. Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan said that firecrackers were being burst to celebrate the festival after midnight when the accident happened. Two members of the temple committee have been detained, and the police have started investigating the incident. Sources say that the temple management had not taken the mandatory license to burst firecrackers.
