The uproar over the alleged use of the Bengali language 'Bangladeshi' in an alleged letter of the Delhi Police is now gaining momentum. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has termed it 'unconstitutional' and 'anti-national'.
At the same time, BJP leader Amit Malviya hit back at Mamata, saying that her reaction is 'dangerous' and 'provocative'. Malviya even demanded action against Mamata under the National Security Act (NSA). This controversy has further fueled linguistic and political tension in the country.
Amit Malviya said that Delhi Police did not call Bengali 'Bangladeshi', but this word was used to identify illegal infiltrators. He claimed that the tone, vocabulary, and dialect of the language spoken in Bangladesh are different from those of Indian Bengali.
CM Mamata attacked the Delhi Police.
Mamata Banerjee fiercely targeted the Delhi Police on Sunday. Sharing a letter from Delhi Police on the social media platform X, he wrote, "How shameful it is that Delhi Police is calling Bengali a 'Bangladeshi' language."
He wrote, "Bengali is our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda. This is the language in which our national anthem and national song are written. Calling it Bangladeshi is an insult to the Constitution."
'Indian is different from Bengali....'
Amit Malviya termed Mamata's statement as 'irresponsible'. He wrote on X, "Delhi Police nowhere called Bengali a Bangladeshi language. This word was used to identify the linguistic identity of the infiltrators, referring to the dialects of Bangladesh like Sylheti, which is different from Indian Bengali."
Malviya said that Mamata's statement is provoking linguistic tension, and for this, she should be held accountable under the NSA.
He further said that Delhi Police's use of 'Bangladeshi language' was an acronym to identify illegal immigrants and not a comment on the Bengali language spoken in West Bengal.
CPI(M) also targeted
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim also slammed the Delhi Police. He wrote on X, "Does the Delhi Police even know the meaning of 'Bangladeshi language'? Are they not aware of the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which recognizes Bengali?" Salim even called the Delhi Police 'uneducated'.
