Congress has opposed the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner of the country. Congress described the appointment as against the spirit of the Constitution and destroying the election process. Congress MP and General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the ruling regime is destroying the election process of the country.
The Congress MP wrote on Twitter that the government has issued a notification for the appointment of a new Central Election Commissioner in a hurry at midnight. This is against the spirit of our Constitution. It has been reiterated by the Supreme Court in several cases that for the sanctity of the electoral process, the Chief Election Commissioner should be an impartial stakeholder. The amended law has removed the Chief Justice from the Chief Election Commissioner selection panel. The government should have waited till the Supreme Court hearing on February 19 before selecting the Chief Election Commissioner.
He wrote that their decision to hold a meeting in a hurry and appoint a new Election Commissioner shows that they want to bypass the Supreme Court's scrutiny and get the appointment done before a clear order comes. Such disgusting behavior only confirms the doubts that many have expressed about how the ruling regime is destroying the electoral process and twisting the rules for its benefit. Whether it is fake voter lists, programs in favor of the BJP, or concerns of EVM hacking, the government and the Chief Election Commissioner appointed by it are under deep suspicion due to such incidents.
He said that as the Leader of the Opposition rightly said, this decision should have been postponed till the Supreme Court decides on the issue by the Constitution.
