The Congress party on Wednesday termed China's claims of mediating between India and Pakistan as alarming. The party said that the Indian public wants answers from the government on this sensitive issue. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on this claim. He said it appears to be making a mockery of the country's national security.
What did the Congress leader say?
Jairam Ramesh wrote on the social media platform X, "President Trump has long been claiming that he personally intervened to stop 'Operation Sindoor' on May 10, 2025. He has said this on several platforms in different countries. The Prime Minister has never reacted to these claims by his so-called good friend. Now, the Chinese Foreign Minister is also making a similar claim that China also mediated. Whereas on July 4, 2025, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Rahul Singh, publicly stated that during 'Operation Sindoor', India was actually confronting and fighting China."
The Congress leader said that given that China was decisively standing with Pakistan, the Chinese claims of mediating between India and Pakistan are alarming. This is not only contrary to the assurances given to the people of the country but also makes a mockery of our national security.
Response sought on China's role in Operation Sindoor.
Ramesh said that this claim should also be understood in the context of our relations with China. He alleged that the clean chit given to China by the Prime Minister on June 19, 2020, has significantly weakened India's negotiating position. He said that our trade deficit is at a record high, and most of the country's exports depend on imports from China. Ramesh said that amidst such one-sided and hostile relations, the people of India deserve an answer on what role China played in the sudden cessation of 'Operation Sindoor'.
What is China's claim? It is worth noting that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that "reducing tensions between India and Pakistan was one of China's mediation successes this year."
India's Official Stance
On the other hand, New Delhi has consistently maintained that the conflict between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10 was resolved through direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries' armies. India's clear position is that there is no place for third-party intervention in matters concerning India and Pakistan.
