MI vs KKR: 12 Records Set in the Match; 14-Year Drought Ends, Record Chase, and a Rohit-Shardul Blast

Posted on 30th Mar 2026 01:18 pm by rohit kumar

Powered by half-century innings from Rohit Sharma (78) and Ryan Rickelton (81), the Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets. With this victory, Mumbai also broke a 13-year-long losing streak. In fact, the last time Mumbai won a season-opening match was back in 2012. Since then, they had failed to win an opening match for 13 consecutive years. Now, by defeating KKR, the team has finally shed this unwanted record.

In the match played at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, KKR—batting first after losing the toss—posted a total of 220 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs, aided by half-century innings from Ajinkya Rahane (67) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (51). In reply, Mumbai chased down the target in 19.1 overs, scoring 224 runs for the loss of four wickets—thanks to century partnerships involving Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton—to clinch the match.

Mumbai's Highest Successful Run Chase in the IPL

Mumbai created history by successfully chasing down a target of 221 runs against Kolkata. This marks MI's highest-ever successful run chase in the IPL, surpassing their previous record of 219 runs set against CSK in 2021. It also stands as the highest successful chase recorded at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai Indians Win Their Opening Match After 5,107 Days

For the first time since 2012, the Mumbai Indians have won their opening match of an IPL season. For 5,107 days—spanning 13 consecutive seasons—the team had consistently lost its opening fixtures.

Opening Match Won for Only the Fifth Time

Across the 19 seasons of the IPL, this marks only the fifth instance where Mumbai has won its opening match. Prior to this, they had achieved this feat four consecutive times between 2009 and 2012. 4. Rohit Sharma's Fastest Half-Century

Rohit Sharma reached his fifty in just 23 balls, marking the fastest half-century of his IPL career. Previously, his quickest fifty had come in 25 balls.

Joint-Fastest Fifty for MI as Well

This 23-ball fifty by Rohit also ranks as one of his fastest innings while playing for Mumbai. He had previously scored a half-century in the exact same number of balls during the 2013 Champions League T20.

Second Fifty in an Opening Match

In 19 seasons, this is only the second time Rohit has scored a half-century in the very first match of the season. The first instance occurred in 2015, when he scored 98 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Most Runs Against KKR

Rohit Sharma has now amassed 1,161 runs against KKR in the IPL—the highest tally by any batsman against a single team. He surpassed Virat Kohli's record of 1,159 runs.

148-Run Opening Partnership

Rohit and Ryan Rickelton shared a 148-run partnership, which stands as the second-highest opening stand for MI. It also marks the highest partnership for the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit's Dominance Over Varun Chakravarthy

Rohit scored 23 runs off just 11 balls against Varun Chakravarthy. Prior to this match, he had scored only 48 runs off 49 balls against Varun in the IPL, making this particular innings all the more remarkable.

Varun's Poor Form Continues

Varun Chakravarthy has maintained an economy rate of 11.86 across his last six T20 matches. He has conceded 273 runs in 23 overs—a particularly dismal statistic for any spinner. In this match as well, he failed to take a wicket for the first time in 17 matches.

A Brilliant Start for Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur claimed three wickets in his debut match for the Mumbai Indians. He broke KKR's strong partnerships by taking three wickets within his first three overs.

Shardul Joins an Elite Club

This marks only the fourth instance in IPL history where a bowler has broken three partnerships worth 35 runs or more. Previously, Andrew Tye and Chris Morris had achieved this feat, and Shardul himself had accomplished it back in 2022.
