CNG-powered auto rickshaws may soon disappear from Delhi roads. The draft of the Delhi government's EV policy 2.0 recommends the phased removal of CNG auto-rickshaws in the capital.

According to news agency PTI, the Delhi government will soon implement the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0. According to the draft of EV Policy 2.0, no CNG auto rickshaw will be allowed to be registered from August 15 this year.

CNG auto permit will not be renewed

Under the policy, CNG auto permits will also not be renewed from August 15 and all such permits will be reissued only with electric auto permits. Along with this, it has also been recommended to remove the vehicles used by municipal bodies and in carrying garbage.

However, in a conversation with Jagran correspondent, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has denied this. He said that it is our policy to promote EV vehicles, but the public will not be allowed to face many problems. Auto rickshaws running completely on CNG will not be discontinued at once.

What is the plan for bikes?

All CNG auto-rickshaws older than 10 years will be compulsorily converted into electric vehicles. Petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers will not be allowed in the draft from August 15, 2026. Also, diesel, petrol, and CNG three-wheeler registration will not be allowed in case of heavy vehicles from August 15, 2025.

Key points of the draft EV policy

Registration of new CNG auto-rickshaws in Delhi will not be done from August 15, 2025.

From August 15, 2025, only e-autos will be converted with a permit.

CNG autos older than 10 years will have to be converted to electric.

Registration of petrol/diesel/CNG two-wheelers will not be done from August 15, 2026.

Registration of three-wheeler cargo vehicles running on diesel/petrol/CNG will also not be done from August 15, 2025.

Garbage collection vehicles will also be converted to electric.

Only electric buses will be purchased in Delhi.

What is the plan for buses?

The draft of the EV policy also recommends converting buses operated by DRC and DIMTS into e-buses. With the introduction of the policy, DTC and DIMTS will buy only electric buses for intra-city operations and BS VI for inter-state service.

Also, private car owners will have to buy electric cars only if they already have two vehicles. This recommendation will come into effect after the notification of EV Policy 2.0. However, the draft of the policy may change during the approval of the Cabinet. In this, changes can be made especially in the recommendations related to two-wheelers.
