Coal India, the world's largest coal mining company, is going to import from abroad after seven years given the power crisis and shortage of coal in the country. The government has taken this decision to ensure adequate storage of coal because of the severe power crisis in six years due to the shortage of coal in April.
Along with this, the state governments have been asked to postpone the process done for imports. A letter dated May 28 from the Ministry of Power said that Coal India would import coal and mix it with domestic coal for government-to-government (G2G) supply. It will be given to government thermal plants and independent power producers.
so decided
The letter said that the decision to import coal through Coal India has been taken as almost all the states thought that the issue of separate coal import contracts would lead to confusion. It is better to import coal centrally. In the third quarter of this year, the country is expected to face a coal shortage due to a pick-up in power demand.
