Garland has announced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the issue of classified documents found at the President's private office and residences. In a statement, the US Justice Department said the investigation would be led by Robert Hur, a former career Justice Department prosecutor and former US Attorney for the District of Maryland.
CNN quoted Garland as saying, "I firmly believe this department's normal procedures can handle all investigations with integrity, but under the rules, exceptional circumstances require the appointment of a special counsel to the case.". This appointment underscores the department's independence and accountability to the public, and its commitment to making decisions that are unquestionably guided only by facts and law, especially in sensitive matters."

Garland said that Hur would receive "all resources necessary for the conduct of his work". At the same time, Hur said in a statement, "I will conduct the assigned investigation with impartial judgment. I intend to pursue the facts swiftly and thoroughly without fear or favor and I am committed to doing this service." I will respect the trust reposed in me."

On Monday, US media reported that Biden's lawyers discovered 10 classified documents related to Ukraine, Iran, and the United Kingdom in the think tank's office. NBC, citing two people familiar with the matter, reported that several aides to President Joe Biden have been interviewed by his vice presidency in connection with an ongoing review of classified government documents improperly conducted by US federal officials.
According to a source, the report said that the people who closed Biden's office at the end of his vice presidency were not aware that there was anything that should not have left the White House.
The report said one of Biden's former aides, who was interviewed by federal officials, is Cathy Chung, who now serves as deputy director of protocol for US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. On Thursday, the White House confirmed that his lawyers had found a 'small number' of classified documents at Biden's home and private library in Wilmington, Delaware.
