New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the WikiLeaks controversy surrounding the latter's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and promised to expose the BJP's "double face".
The BJP keeps getting corrupt people into the party fold, putting them on high pedestals and giving them tickets, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said at a press conference here.
"They (BJP workers) are distributing fake certificates on the basis of WikiLeaks claiming that Modi was called incorruptible. First, you have this kind of track record and then you are distributing such certificates", he said.
Whistleblower website WikiLeaks Tuesday denied it endorsed the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi as "incorruptible", and posted a cable quoting Congress workers as praising him.
WikiLeaks said in a tweet that its founder Julian Assange "has never spoken about Modi in any manner whatsoever. US docs we published say both good and bad things about Modi".
Anand Sharma said the Congress has brought in many anti-corruption bills like the Lokpal. "If some other anti-corruption bills have not been passed in parliament, then the BJP should answer for that."
"We introduced a law to protect whistleblowers. We introduced a law on judicial accountability. UPA (United Progressive Alliance) has made laws to empower people," he added.
"They should answer such questions (on corrupt people). Nobody is willing to answer these questions," the Congress spokesperson said.
"We want to make this clear that in the coming elections we will go to the public with our track record and achievements and expose the BJP's double face," he added.
