According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), incidents related to cybercrime are increasing rapidly in the country. Between 2018 and 2020, 1,22,018 such incidents were reported. At the same time, an increase of 23787 cases has been seen in 2020 as compared to 2018. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Assam have recorded the highest number of cybercrimes in 2020. Sikkim is the only state in the country where not a single case of cybercrime was reported last year. On the other hand, looking at the increasing graph of cybercrime in the country year after year, it seems that in this modern era of information technology, cybercriminals are getting stronger. In such a situation, ensuring cyber security and teaching a lesson to criminals is becoming a tough challenge before the government.
The above report shows that there are not only economic motives behind cybercrime, but many social and psychological reasons are also carried out for such crimes. The number of cybercrime incidents reported in 2020 includes 1470 incidents of personal revenge, 822 motivated by anger, 30142 for deceiving, 1706 for defaming, 254 for pranking, with the purpose of vulgar exploitation 3293 and 113 cases were related to conducting terrorist activities.
Cybercriminals do not deter from breaching the privacy of the people to playing with the security of the nation. They also make women and children their victims and harass them unnecessarily. In 2020, 10405 and 1102 cases of cybercrime against women and children came to light respectively. Cybercriminals trick people through fake emails, messages, phone calls, credit-debit cards, internet banking, and OTP-related clones, etc.
In the cyber crimes registered last year, 2160 related to ATM card fraud, 1194 related to credit and debit cards, 1093 related to OTP, and 4047 cases of money laundering through online banking came to light. Cybercriminals carry out such incidents in a very clever way. However, with the formation of the cyber cell, many gangs have been exposed. The administration must keep a close watch on them.
Committing any kind of cybercrime is a punishable offense under the Information Technology Act in the country. Despite this, such cases come to the fore every day. While the advent of information technology has proved to be a boon, many gangs are also committing crimes by taking its help. Many cities of the country have become a stronghold of cybercrime these days. This situation has to change.
