The Conference on Biological Diversity (COP 15) began on Wednesday in the Canadian city of Montreal. Around 20,000 delegates from 196 countries including India are participating in the conference. The participants include Ministers, senior officials, environmental experts, and office bearers of organizations. At the conference, there will be consideration of making an action plan to stop the damage to nature. There will be an agreement to complete this action plan by 2030.
COP 15 starts after COP 27
This is the second major UN effort for environmental reform after the International Environment Conference held in Egypt in November. In this conference, which will run till December 19, an outline will be made for the protection of all the living beings living in the atmosphere, so that the degradation of nature stops. The convention will consider conserving 30 percent of the land and marine environment by 2030. At the opening ceremony of the conference, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that nature is in danger. There are continuous attacks on it. Whatever is happening in the world right now is not happening for the good.
Appeal for help in nature improvement
Trudeau said that Canada is ready to provide all possible assistance in the improvement of nature and the development of biodiversity. His country supports the proposal to preserve 30 percent of nature. Canada has also announced $300 million in aid to developing countries for environmental improvement efforts. At the time Trudeau was speaking, organizations in favor of environmental reform were trying to disrupt his speech by singing and playing drums. These organizations believe that the world's rich countries have caused the most damage to the environment and now they are only talking about improvements, not doing anything. It may be noted that Canada is a member country of the G7, an organization of industrialized countries.
If the situation does not improve, there is a danger to humanity - Guterres
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, if the situation is not controlled, there will be a danger of human extinction. There is no more time to waste on improving the environment. Due to rapid changes in the environment, more than one million insects and animals, and birds have become extinct or have reached the verge of extinction. The extinction of living beings at such a fast pace has not been seen in the last one crore years. Not only this, but the nature of about 40 percent of the land has also deteriorated. The conference, organized under the banner of the United Nations, will last for two weeks and will discuss the environment, plants, and animals.
