Developed (rich) countries are not ready to help to develop and poor countries clean the atmosphere in the environmental conference held in Egypt. The conference has been extended for one day due to the inability to agree on the Declaration on Environmental Reforms. Now the conference will conclude on Saturday. The draft that came from the United Nations on Thursday contains most of the same things that were said at the Glasgow conference in 2021.
Some new points were included in Friday's draft. In this, it has been decided to provide financial assistance to the poor countries who have suffered damage due to the environment and to help the victims of displacement. But developed countries, especially the US, disagreed with helping those displaced by floods, moderate storms, and the like. Said that this would make them legally responsible for helping with normal seasonal changes around the world.
Many developing and poor countries including India have long been seeking help in such matters. The draft ignores India's proposal to phase out the use of oil, gas, and coal. Developed countries have also ignored the demands of developing and poor countries for money and technology for environmental improvement. At the conference, the developed countries made a move to make new fuel usage rules for them by making a list of 20 countries that emit the most harmful gases.
India and China are also included in this list. By doing this, the developed countries covered up their acts that had harmed the environment in the past decades and tried to make India and China responsible. But due to strong opposition from India and China, this effort of developed countries could not succeed. The UN draft calls for effective efforts to reduce emissions of harmful gases to keep the atmospheric temperature at 1.5 °C. Warns of ill effects if the emissions of gases are not reduced. Developed countries did not even discuss the demand for funds for environmental improvement of developing and poor countries in this conference, while this issue was included in the agenda of the conference.
Developed countries accepted the proposal of providing economic and technical assistance in principle in 2009, which was to be given from 2020. The Paris Agreement signed in 2015 also mentions this assistance of $ 100 billion per year. But the developed countries did not start giving it. Now they don't even want to discuss that aid. Developed countries are silent even on the proposal of phasing out the use of oil and gas. Experts are calling it a surprising trend. The latest UN draft is being supported by the US, the European Union, and many developing countries.
