Cyclone Dana is expected to reach Puri in Odisha and Sagar districts of Bengal on October 25. During this time, due to the effect of the storm, winds will blow at a speed of 120 km per hour and heavy rain is expected.
It can hit the coast of Puri from the night of October 24 to the morning of October 25
The Meteorological Department said that the low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal has now turned into Cyclone Dana. This cyclone is moving towards the west-northwest direction. On Wednesday morning, it was about 560 km south-east of Paradip in Odisha and about 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in Bengal. The Meteorological Department said, 'It is expected to move northwest and turn into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 24. From the night of 24 October to the morning of 25 October, it will cross the coasts of North Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island, during which the wind speed can be 120 kilometers per hour. It is feared that this storm can cause heavy destruction.
Preparations to send 10 lakh people to safe places
Given the possible threat of cyclone Dana, the central government has sent 150 NDRF personnel to Odisha in a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force. These soldiers were sent from Bhatinda in Punjab and reached Bhubaneswar on Wednesday morning. Given the threat of the storm, the Odisha government has started preparations to send 10 lakh people to safe places as a precaution. According to media reports, 198 trains have been canceled due to the storm. The Odisha government has canceled the leave of all employees and has ordered schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers closed from 23 to 25 October.
The Coast Guard is also on high alert
The Coast Guard said on Tuesday that it is on high alert given the threat of the storm and has deployed its ships and aircraft in potentially sensitive areas. Meteorological Department Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said that all the eastern coastal areas from Puri to West Bengal are likely to be affected by this cyclone. Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said that the state government has completed all preparations. He said that 250 relief camps equipped with all facilities have been prepared.
