Amid the debate over longer working hours, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) member Sanjeev Sanyal on Sunday termed the demands of corporate leaders as foolish. Sanyal said in a post on X, "It seems that the idea of an 80-hour work week has become popular. American investment banks want to make it the standard."
One should be prepared for some time.
He said that there are indeed some times when such long working hours are needed and professionals who get good salaries should be prepared for it. But making it the standard shows that it is some kind of goal.
Sanyal said that there are moral hazards and monitoring problems in implementing it and maintaining quality. In investment banks with such a culture, professionals start doing their personal work during office hours like going to the gym during office hours, having long lunches, and meeting friends which is called 'meeting'.
Only senior managers can work for 80 hours.
This is how the City of London and Wall Street work. He said that only very senior managers can work 80 hours per week because the system is made for them (not just salary, but also secretaries, assistants, etc.). The rest of the people need to live life.
Narayana Murthy started the debate.
It is worth noting that the debate on work and life balance was started by Infosys founder Narayan Murthy and recently it was promoted by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subramaniam. Murthy suggested working 70 hours and Subramaniam 90 hours per week including Sunday.
Adar Poonawalla also reacted.
Subramanian said, 'How long can you stare at your wife? What will you do sitting at home.' Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla responded to this comment on Sunday in a light-hearted manner. He said that my wife Natasha likes to stare at me on Sunday.
Earlier, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra had also said, "I am not on the internet media because I am lonely. My wife is wonderful and I like to look at her. I am here because it is a wonderful business tool." RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka also said that work-life balance is not optional, but necessary.
