New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party, which has sought public opinion on whether it should form a Delhi government or not, has received over 4.5 lakh responses through SMS, email and phone calls.
"We have received over 4.5 lakh suggestions whether to form the government or not since we have opened our phone lines and website last evening," an AAP leader associated with the job said.
The party said it got the maximum number of responses through SMSes. But its next course of action will be to carry out a door-to-door survey to record the opinion of the people. “The party has got 25 lakh pamphlets printed for this purpose,” the AAP said.
The distribution of letters seeking public response began on Tuesday. “Public meetings attended by senior leaders will also be organised in all municipal wards over the week-end. The data collected will be analysed and the results are expected to be out on Monday,” a party office-bearer said.
The AAP decided to go for a referendum as there is a section of opinion in the party that it should not shy away from forming a government with the support of the Congress.
Mr. Kejriwal said the section favouring formation of the government felt that the Congress would not withdraw support till the Lok Sabha elections.
Another factor that weighed on AAP was the growing perception among some people that the party was trying to escape from its responsibility to govern.
“This section of people feels that the AAP should run the government till the Congress and the BJP allow that to happen. The day these parties bring the AAP government down, the party should fight a re-election. That way the public will teach them a lesson,” Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday.
Mr. Kejriwal’s party, with 28 seats, was invited by the Lieutenant-Governor for a discussion on the possibility of forming the government and he had sought time to arrive at a decision.
The party’s stand until now had been that it would neither seek nor offer support either to the Congress or the BJP.
