A big revelation has been made in the report of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) regarding the stampede that took place at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. Initial investigation has revealed gross negligence has a copy of the initial investigation conducted by the Railway Police of Delhi Police.
The report states that at around 10.00 pm on the night of February 15, a stampede took place at New Delhi Railway Station. According to the report, there was a huge crowd on platforms number 12, 13, 14, 15,16. Due to this, the paths on these platforms were completely jammed.
It is reported that there was a huge crowd of passengers on platform number 14, waiting for the train going to Prayagraj. At the same time, on platform number 13, a large number of passengers had gathered to board the Swatantrata Senani Express going from New Delhi to Darbhanga.
This train was running late and was rescheduled to depart at midnight, due to which the passengers remained on the platform. In such a situation, the crowd kept increasing on both platforms numbers 14 and 13.
The paths leading to the platform were closed.
The report said that after the Shivganga Express left platform number 12 at 8 pm on Saturday, a large crowd of passengers started gathering on the platform. Due to this, the paths leading from platform number 12 to 16 were completely jammed.
More tickets were being sold.
The report said that in addition to this, railway officials were issuing about 1,500 general tickets per hour for Prayagraj. Due to this, more passengers gathered on platform number 14. Due to this heavy crowd, there was hardly any space left to stand on the platform. Along with this, the railway team was also asked to stop selling tickets.
Changing the platform proved costly.
Given the increasing crowd and continuous ticket sales, around 10 pm, railway officials announced a special train for Prayagraj from platform number 16. On hearing this announcement, general ticket holders, who were already standing on platform number 14, crossed the footbridge and rushed towards platform number 16.
In doing so, they crushed the passengers who were already sitting on the footbridge, leading to a stampede. Several men, women, and children were injured in the incident. Officials say that the announcement of changing the platform amid heavy crowds led to stampede and confusion. According to RPF, the duty station in charge was informed about the stampede.
The railway report is awaited.
Railway Police Deputy Commissioner of Police KPS Malhotra said that the police are waiting for the report of the Railway Security Commissioner. Further action will be taken based on the report. If negligence is found, an FIR will be registered.
