The controversy began after Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, in an interview with BBC Asian Network, said that he was receiving fewer work opportunities. He suggested that this might be due to changes in the industry's leadership. He also hinted at underlying communal reasons, although he clarified that this discrimination wasn't openly expressed.

Anup Jalota's advice to AR Rahman

Responding to AR Rahman's statement, Anup Jalota said, "Music director AR Rahman was initially a Hindu and later converted to Islam. After that, he did a lot of work and won the hearts of many. If he now feels that he is not getting films because he is a Muslim in our country, then he should convert back to Hinduism. Converting to Hinduism will ensure that he starts getting films again. That's what he means, isn't it? My suggestion is that he should become a Hindu again and then see if he starts getting films."

Celebrities comment

Several other celebrities also reacted to Rahman's remarks. Actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut criticized Rahman's statement. Singer Shaan also commented on Rahman's statement, saying that an artist's work has nothing to do with their religion.

Rahman shares a video.

Following the criticism of his statement, AR Rahman shared a video on X (formerly Twitter). In it, he said that he is proud to be an Indian. He also expressed gratitude for being a part of many major projects in India. After this video, Paresh Rawal came out in his support.
