In a meeting with Water Minister Atishi and Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj regarding the water crisis in the capital, LG VK Saxena has asked to find out where the water is disappearing from Haryana via Delhi.
In this meeting, the officials told the LG that Haryana is releasing more water than the prescribed amount in the Munak Canal. But by the time it reaches Bawana, this water is decreasing by 20 percent. To end the water shortage, it is necessary to find out the source of this disappearing water.
Officials inspected the Munak Canal
In the meeting, the LG and the ministers were told that on Sunday, the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) officials inspected the water in the Munak Canal along with the officials of the Delhi and Haryana governments. It has been observed that an adequate amount of water is being released from Haryana. But the entire water is not reaching Delhi. 18 to 20 percent of the water disappears on the way.
Officials said that on Sunday, Haryana released 1161 cusecs of water from Munak Canal to Kakori (for Delhi), whereas 1050 cusecs of water is to be released for Delhi. But only 960.78 cusecs of water reached Bawana.
18 percent of water disappeared on the way
About 200 cusecs (about 18 percent) of water disappeared on the way, whereas it should not be more than five percent. The issue of water disappearance was also raised in a meeting by UYRB on June 5. Officials of the Delhi and Haryana governments were present at that meeting.
It was decided in the meeting that water disappearance must be stopped. Out of nine water purification plants in Delhi, seven get water from the Munak Canal. However, due to the lack of repair of the canal in the Delhi area, water is leaking and in some places, water is being stolen through tankers. Pictures of water theft from tankers were also shared in the meeting.
The Jal Board will make a plan for water
In the meeting, LG once again raised the issue of water leakage in Delhi. He said that a lot of water is wasted due to the pipeline not being repaired. The ministers told him that a plan will soon be prepared with the Jal Board regarding this. Water wastage will be stopped.
LG gave assurance
In the meeting, LG assured the ministers that he would demand the Haryana government to release more water on humanitarian grounds. He also assured us that solve the problem of the shortage of employees in the Jal Board and the extra burden on the CEO soon.
Advice to avoid allegations and counter-allegations
LG advised the ministers to avoid allegations and counter-allegations and talk to the neighboring state to resolve the matter. He said that even if Haryana gives additional water, Delhi cannot purify it. He said that if the water leaking in Delhi and the water disappearing while coming from Haryana is stopped, then the problem will be solved.
