Earth Day, ie Earth Day, is being celebrated all over the world today. Its purpose is to make people aware of the issue of environmental protection and to understand the importance of the earth. This year the theme of World Earth Day is 'Invest in our Earth' i.e. 'Invest in our Earth'.
People organize various programs on Earth Day. These include planting trees along the road, picking up garbage, cleaning the ponds, and making people understand the importance of the earth. Apart from this, students are made aware of the earth in schools and colleges. Many people also spread awareness about this through street plays.
40 thousand species are threatened with extinction
Humans may have reached space, but the earth is also paying a big price for it. 10 thousand years ago, 600 million hectares, that is, about 57%, was forest on the earth. Now this 400 crore hectare is left. Of the 142,500 species included in the IUCN Red Data Book, 40,000 are at risk of extinction. This is 28% of the known species.
Global warming will wreak havoc
NASA scientists say that the way global warming has increased due to human intervention, changes are happening rapidly on the earth. The changes that have happened in the last 2000 years are astonishing. Greenhouse gas emissions have increased rapidly since 1750. In 2019, the level of carbon dioxide in the environment was the highest ever recorded.
According to NASA, by the year 2100, the temperature of the world will increase significantly. People will have to bear the terrible heat. If carbon emissions and pollution are not stopped, the average temperature will increase by 4.4 °C. In the next two decades, the temperature will increase by 1.5 °C. If the mercury rises at this rapid rate, the glaciers will also melt. Their water will bring destruction to the plains and sea areas.
When did Earth Day start?
In the 1960s and 1970s, people started cutting trees in large numbers. Due to this, the forest started dying. In 1969, a program was organized in Washington to make people aware of environmental protection. US Senator Gerald Nelson of Wisconsin announced that in 1970 there would be environmental demonstrations across the country. Many people took part in this. Then in the year 1970, Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on 22 April.
Do this work to increase the age of the earth
1. Pollution and dirt should be stopped from growing and more and more trees and plants should be planted on the earth.
2. We should save electricity. With this, the situation of global warming can be avoided. Due to this problem, the natural imbalance on the earth is increasing.
3. Do not use plastic things. Due to plastic, the dirt on the earth is continuously increasing.
4. Avoid using chemicals and things made from it. Chemical pollution spreads on the earth in every way i.e. water, air, and soil. We must stop it.
5. We should not waste the materials we get from the earth.
