The Modi government at the Center is working very fast towards strengthening the country's infrastructure. Taking another step in this direction, PM Modi inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport to connect the Buddhist pilgrimage sites of the country with tourists from all over the world. It will facilitate domestic and international pilgrims to visit the Mahaparinirvana site of Lord Buddha. This is being seen as an important step for India.
During this inaugural ceremony, the present situation and future of India's civil aviation sector were also discussed. Inaugurating the Kushinagar International Airport, PM Narendra Modi said that his government will try to create a network of more than 200 airports, heliports, and water domes in the country in the next 3-4 years.

According to PM Modi, more than 900 new air routes have been approved in the last few years under the Modi government's ambitious UDAN scheme. Out of these, air service has started on more than 350. More than 50 new airports or closed airstrips which were not in service earlier have been made operational under the UDAN scheme.
The central government has made an ambitious plan to connect small towns with air service under the 'UDAN' scheme. Under this plan, closed airstrips and army airbases are to be used for civilian flights. Apart from this, new airports are also being built so that passengers traveling by air can get convenience. PM Narendra Modi and the ministers of the concerned ministry of the central government have said many times that their goal is to get the slippers wearer to travel by air.
How many airports were built during the tenure of the Modi government?
To promote air travel in the country, the Modi government at the Center has done a lot of work in both its tenures. According to Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, only 75 airports were built in the country in the last 70 years. At the same time, 61 new airports have been built across the country during the tenure of the Modi government in the last seven years. The purpose of making all these airports was to provide air travel in small towns so that common people could get an opportunity to travel in aircraft.
How many airports are there in the country?
According to the Airports Authority of India, there are currently 486 airports in the country. Many of these are not even in working condition. Whereas, many are used by the army. While there are a total of 34 international airports in the country at present. Tamil Nadu and Kerala have the maximum number of four international airports. No state in North India has more than two airports.
Five international airports in UP alone
There will be five international airports very soon with the inauguration of Kushinagar airport and Ayodhya airport in the coming times. While 21 airports and seven airstrips are in the process of being functional. Uttar Pradesh is set to become the state with the most five international airports. The government is also preparing to start international airlines from Jewar by the year 2024.
