On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed in the country on 25 June 1975, PM Narendra Modi launched a major attack on the Congress. Recalling the days of the Emergency, he said that today fifty years have passed since the imposition of Emergency, one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history. This was the time when the then-c Congress government had held democracy hostage.
The voice of Parliament was suppressed.
PM Modi said that no Indian can ever forget how the spirit of our Constitution was violated. The voice of Parliament was suppressed and an attempt was made to control the courts. The 42nd Amendment is a prime example of their actions. The poor, the marginalized, and the Dalits were specifically targeted, which also included insulting their dignity.
Salute to those who fought against the Emergency
The Prime Minister said that we salute everyone who stood firm in the fight against the Emergency. These people came from all over India, from every region, from different ideologies who worked together with each other with the same purpose. Their goal was to protect India's democratic structure and maintain the ideals for which our freedom fighters dedicated their lives. It was their collective struggle that ensured that the then Congress government had to restore democracy and hold fresh elections. In which they lost badly.
Will fulfill the dreams of the poor and the deprived
The PM wrote that we are working together to strengthen the principles enshrined in our Constitution and to realize our dream of a developed India. We will touch new heights of progress and fulfill the dreams of the poor and the deprived.
I was an RSS pracharak then.
Recalling the days of the Emergency, PM Modi said that when the Emergency was imposed, I was a young pracharak of the RSS. The anti-emergency movement was a learning experience for me. It reaffirmed the importance of protecting our democratic structure. At the same time, I had the opportunity to learn a lot from people across the political spectrum. I am happy that Bluecraft Digital Foundation has compiled some of those experiences in the form of a book. Whose preface was written by HD Deve Gowda ji, who himself was a veteran of the anti-emergency movement.
People share experiences
PM Modi said that The Emergency Diaries is an account of my journey during the Emergency. It brought back many memories of that time. I urge all those who remember those dark days of the Emergency or whose families have suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media. This will create awareness among the youth about the shameful time from 1975 to 1977.
