Environment Protection: The world needs to learn from India's growing steps

India is among 175 countries that have signed the Paris Agreement. The way India set a net zero target by 2070 in COP 26 has also been exemplary. In this direction, the country has taken a step towards adopting a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle of living. The message of Panchamrit given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the form of five oaths is also very important. India is the second largest emitter after China and the US. If the war against climate change is to be won, then India's role in it will be very important. The world should learn from India's efforts and emulate them.

 

The Government of India has taken several initiatives at the policy level to support the development of renewable energy technologies. Green Hydrogen Policy has been formulated in the country and amendment has also been made to National Energy Conservation Act 2001. These will help in reducing the carbon emissions of the industrial sector. However, the use of coal also remains a challenge. The Ministry of Power has constituted an expert committee, which will prepare a proposal for a ban on setting up new coal-based power plants by 2030. India has also planned to increase the carbon sink by increasing the forest cover.

 

India should take steps to settle things in this decade and create an emission-free system by 2070. It is also to be understood that creating a carbon emission-free system is challenging and will also require massive investment. Therefore, the big responsibility of success in this will also be on the financial assistance received at the international level. India is still well on its way toward the 2030 target and will have to push forward with a proposal to cut emissions further by 2030 to hold the global average temperature rise to 1.5°C.

 

India is the only G20 country, which is growing in line with the target set for 2030 under the Paris Agreement. India is also moving rapidly in the direction of increasing renewable energy and making electricity generation carbon-emission free. India has shown that it is capable and committed to leading efforts to fight climate change.
