Hearing in SC against forcible conversion today: Central government has to file an affidavit, court had said – take necessary steps

There will be a hearing in the Supreme Court today in the case of forced conversion. During the last hearing, the court had told the central government and asked them for a plan to stop it. The court had sought an affidavit from the Centre. The government can file it today.

 

Petitioner's demand- separate law to prevent religious conversion

Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a petition regarding forced conversion. In the petition, a separate law has been demanded to stop such cases of religious conversions. Or an appeal has been made to include this crime in the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It has also been stated in the petition that this issue is not related to any one place, but is the problem of the whole country which needs immediate attention.

 

The court told the center – to try to honestly

Describing conversion as a very serious issue, the Supreme Court asked the Center to intervene in the matter. Also said that try honestly to stop this trend. The court also warned that if forced conversions are not stopped, then very difficult situations will arise.

 

Such cases are more in tribal areas

On behalf of the Center, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that such cases of religious conversion are seen more in tribal areas. On this, the court asked him if it is so then what is the government doing. After this, the court asked the Center to clear the steps to be taken in this matter. The court also said that conversion is legal under the Constitution, but forced conversion is not.

 

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that it was discussed in the Constituent Assembly in 1950 and the government is also aware of the issue. He said that the government will soon file its reply in this regard.
