All-Women Bench: Only the bench of women judges will hear matrimonial and bail matters today, for the third time such initiative of the Supreme Court

Today in the Supreme Court, the hearing of matrimonial disputes and bail matters will be heard only by the bench of women judges. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has constituted a bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M. Trivedi for this.

 

A bench of women judges will hear matrimonial disputes and transferred cases of bail. This is the third time in the history of the Supreme Court, that a bench of only women judges has been constituted. This bench of both women judges is currently hearing in room number 11 of the Supreme Court. 32 cases have been listed before this bench of only women judges. The hearing began with 10 transferred cases of matrimonial disputes. After this, 10 cases of bail and others will be heard.

The first women's bench was formed in 2013

The first women's bench in the apex court was constituted in 2013. Then a bench of Justice Gyansudha Mishra and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was formed. After this, in 2018, a bench of Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indira Banerjee was formed. There are currently three women judges in the Supreme Court. These include Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagaratna, and Justice Bela Trivedi.

 

Nagaratna will become the country's first woman CJI in 2027

Justice BV Nagaratna is going to become the country's first woman Chief Justice in 2027. The Supreme Court currently has 27 judges, including the CJI, against the sanctioned strength of 34.

 

Controversy over the recommendations of the collegium

Meanwhile, the apex court and the government are at loggerheads over not making appointments of judges as per the recommendations of the collegium. The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over the withholding of appointment files.
