It has not been even a year since Chandrababu Naidu was almost removed from the scene of Indian or regional politics. No one expected him to recover, but his heartfelt appeal in a rally during the elections worked and he won the assembly elections with a huge margin.
At the same time, he emerged as an important ally in Modi Government 3.0 by winning 16 Lok Sabha seats. His return is not an ordinary event. While being the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for 13 years and 247 days, he had established himself as a national leader.
Naidu played an important role in developing Hyderabad
During his tenure as Chief Minister, Naidu's image has been that of an economic reformer and a leader promoting information technology-based economic development. He developed Hyderabad as a cyber city and also focused on the development of the state's infrastructure, including the construction of the new capital Amaravati. He was seen as the future Prime Minister.
When Naidu became emotional in public
In such a situation, his removal from power, then arrest and 52 days of jail had marginalized him. When he came out of jail about eight months ago, perhaps he was not able to trust himself enough to return to active politics in this way, that is why he made a heartfelt appeal to the people of Andhra Pradesh in a public meeting in Kurnool that if you elect me and my party and send them to the assembly, only then will Andhra Pradesh see the face of development, otherwise this will be my last election. This appeal worked and the public handed over power to him.
By entering the electoral battle and defeating the ruling Jagan Mohan Reddy, he has knocked strongly on the doors of state and national politics. This has proved that he is an 'architect'. He knows how to make good things by collecting broken and scattered things.
Leaving his PhD incomplete, he entered politics
Chandrababu Naidu, who is 74 years old, is one of the few characters in Indian politics who developed his style of working. He was born in a farmer family in Naravaripalli, a small village near Tirupati in south-eastern Andhra. Chandrababu is the eldest of five siblings.
Since there was no school in his village, he completed his fifth grade from a government school in nearby Sheshapuram and his twelfth grade from a government school in Chandragiri. When he was doing his graduation from Sri Venkateswara University College of Arts in Tirupati, he entered student politics.
He obtained his bachelor's degree in 1972 and continued his postgraduate studies. In 1974, under the guidance of Professor Dr. DL Narayan, he started working on his PhD on the subject of economic ideas of Professor NG Ranga, but did not complete his PhD. In his early life, he joined the Congress Party.
Rebellion and coup against father-in-law
In 1980, N. Chandrababu Naidu married Nara Bhuvaneswari, daughter of NT Rama Rao, a famous South Indian actor and founder of Telugu Desam (NTR). Naidu remained in Congress even after marriage. In 1983, he lost the assembly elections to a TDP candidate. After that, he left Congress and joined TDP.
In August 1995, Naidu led a successful intraparty coup against his father-in-law to counter the growing influence of NT Rama Rao's (NTR) second wife Lakshmi Parvati (or Parvati). He was later unanimously elected the leader of Telugu Desam and took over as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in place of NTR.
He continued to strengthen the party and in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, Telugu Desam won a total of 16 seats. In the September-October 1999 Lok Sabha elections, the Telugu Desam performed even better, winning 29 seats and cementing Naidu's reputation as an important leader.
He extended his party's support (without joining) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA, which ruled the country between 1999 and 2004. Apart from this, he was reappointed in October 1999 during his tenure as Chief Minister.
At that time, based on his modern thinking and work style, he tried to make Hyderabad a world-class city and developed infrastructure. During this period, a term started being used for him - 'Corporate CM'.
Became Chief Minister again after state division
In the years 2014 and 2019, Chandrababu Naidu lost the elections to Jagan Mohan Reddy's party. In the year 2004, he again returned to power in the state. He became Chief Minister for the third time after Telangana was formed by dividing Andhra Pradesh. Naidu's emphasis on the development of information technology helped turn Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, into one of India's most attractive destinations for new investment.
He is considered the real architect of Hyderabad. When it became part of Telangana, he announced to development of Amaravati as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh to rival Hyderabad. Even a day before taking the oath, he reiterated his resolve to complete the unfinished plan to make Amaravati the capital. Since the state treasury of Andhra Pradesh is empty, everyone will be watching how he will complete his 'Super Six' plan with this scheme.
Dominance in national politics
Despite the defeat and victory in the state and political upheaval, Chandrababu Naidu's dominance remained intact. His eyes were completely on national politics and for that, he was also moving forward in a planned manner. During the elections of 1996 and 1998, he led the United Front during the government led by HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral.
In the year 1998, he supported the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He gave unconditional support to the NDA government formed under the leadership of Atal Bihari. He was also the convener of the NDA.
Claimed to return to the House only after becoming the Chief Minister
In the 2019 elections, the Telugu Desam Party lost badly. He was present as the leader of the opposition, but in the year 2021, Naidu walked out of the Assembly in protest against the remarks against a family member and said that he would return to the House only after becoming the Chief Minister.
This oath of his seems to be fulfilled. He was arrested by the state CID on 9 September 2023 in the skill development scam. He spent about 52 days in Raja Mahendravaram Central Jail.
Strategic planner
Naidu's son Nara Lokesh says that his father is a very good strategic planner. He spent the time he spent in jail making election strategy. Within a month of losing the election in 2019, he started preparing for the election. He used to hold regular meetings with Sh Time Consulting. As the leader of the opposition, he started cornering the Jagan government.
Although we were hopeless when he went to jail, he used the 52 days he spent in jail very well in planning. When he was in jail, Pawan Kalyan of the Janasena Party was not allowed to meet him, but no one knew that both of them had met in the year 2022 itself and had made plans for the next government.
In 2019, he did groundwork to bring back 6000 panchayat workers who were forced to join the Jagan government. That proved helpful in this election. Chandrababu Naidu made unemployment and lack of investment an issue and succeeded in making the election battle a battle between the Jagan government and the common people.
Establishment of a global non-political think tank
He wants to leave his mark not only on the political scene but also as a global leader. He founded the NTR Memorial Trust, which includes initiatives such as providing free education, providing blood transfusion facilities, organizing health camps, and supporting empowerment and livelihood programs.
The trust manages a blood bank and thalassemia center in Hyderabad as well as blood banks in Visakhapatnam and Tirupati. He founded the Chandrababu Naidu Global Forum for Sustainable Transformation (GFST) in Hyderabad in the year 2020 for sustainable change. It is positioned as a global non-profit and apolitical think tank aimed at promoting sustainability in economies and communities.
Naidu is also an entrepreneur
In June 2023, it hosted a seminar on 'Deep Technologies' in Hyderabad. Its projects include the development of Vision India@2047 in line with India's 100th year of independence. He is also an entrepreneur. In 1992, he founded Heritage Foods Ltd, a dairy enterprise.
Currently, Naidu's wife Nara Bhuvaneshwari holds the position of vice-chairman and managing director, while Naidu's daughter-in-law Nara Brahmani serves as executive director. Heritage has hundreds of outlets in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. After winning the election, the stock of this company jumped significantly. There was a lot of discussion about it.
