Former Australia captain Greg Chappell believes that Shubman Gill has performed brilliantly in batting against England and has shown glimpses of his potential as a young captain, but his real test will begin now, while India is trailing 1-2 in the five-match Test series. India lost the third Test match against England at Lord's by 22 runs and trailed 1-2 in the series. Both teams will face each other in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester from July 23.

Chappell wrote in his column in ESPNcricinfo, 'The Indian team is now preparing for the last two Test matches against England. In such a situation, all eyes are now on their 25-year-old captain, Shubman Gill. As a talented young player, he has performed brilliantly in batting and has also shown glimpses of leadership ability, but his real test will be now. This is the opportunity that will determine his direction as Test captain. '

Chappell wants Gill to set the benchmark for the team with his performance. He said, 'Gill has to show what kind of team he wants India to be. The captain sets the tone within the team not only with his words but also with his performance and clear norms. This means keeping the team disciplined on the field. India cannot afford to be a team with poor fielding once again. The best teams are brilliant in the field. They do not give runs easily. They do not miss opportunities.'

Chappell wants Gill to be firm in selecting the team that he thinks can win the match for them. He said, 'The selectors and Gill have to keep faith in the players they select. They have to identify a core group of players in whom they have faith that they can perform well.' Chappell has written, 'They have to make their clear plan and make each player aware of his role. Every player on the team should know their role. He should know what is expected of him.'

He wrote, 'If Gill wants to become a great Test captain, then this is his chance to establish his credentials not only as a batsman but also as a captain. If Gill leads with clear thinking and determination, he will not only shape this series but will also decide the future of Indian cricket.'
