Amidst the ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Government of India has assured the public and the industrial sector of an uninterrupted supply of fuel. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that, despite the global situation, the country possesses adequate reserves of petrol, diesel, LPG, and natural gas. Amidst reports of panic buying by customers in certain locations, the government has implemented swift, multi-pronged measures to maintain stability within the country’s energy market.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, provided an update regarding the adequate availability of fuel within the country. She offered assurances that supplies would remain secure despite the prevailing situation in West Asia. In this regard, the government has taken several significant steps.

Sharma stated that petrol, diesel, LPG, and natural gas are available in sufficient quantities across the country. Refineries are operating normally, and crude oil reserves are also adequate. While instances of panic buying have been observed in some areas, citizens have been reassured. To ensure continued availability in the domestic market, the government has reduced excise duties.

The excise duty on petrol and diesel has been reduced by ten rupees. Additionally, to maintain the availability of diesel, the government has imposed an export duty. She urged the public not to give credence to rumors and to consume fuel strictly according to their actual needs. Furthermore, a 100% supply of natural gas is being ensured for domestic consumption.

Status of LPG Supply

LPG distributors face no shortage of supplies; adequate stocks are available, and their continued availability is being actively ensured. Yesterday, approximately 95% of all bookings were placed online. Furthermore, about 82% of deliveries were authenticated using verification codes. Over the past two days, 9.2 million (92 lakh) cylinders were delivered against a total of 10.4 million (1.04 crore) bookings.

Increase in Commercial LPG Supply

The government has increased the availability of commercial LPG by approximately 70%. Priority is being accorded to dhabas (roadside eateries), restaurants, and industrial canteens. Special attention is also being directed toward migrant workers. Steps are being taken to ensure that everyone receives an adequate supply of LPG.

What has the Ministry of Petroleum stated regarding the status of LPG and Natural Gas?

On the front of fuel security, the Ministry has also clarified the situation regarding the uninterrupted supply of natural gas and cooking gas (LPG). According to the Ministry:

A 100% supply of natural gas for domestic use is being ensured.

With regard to LPG, no distributor is facing any shortage in supply.

To ensure transparency, 95% of LPG bookings have been made through online channels, and 82% of deliveries have been authenticated using a ‘Delivery Authentication Code.’

Within the last two days, approximately 1.04 crore bookings were received across the country, against which 92 lakh cylinders have already been successfully delivered.

Relief for the Commercial Sector and MSMEs

The government has also demonstrated proactiveness regarding the availability of commercial LPG. By strengthening the supply chain, the availability of commercial LPG has been increased by approximately 70%. Small businesses will directly benefit from this increase, as the government is prioritizing gas distribution specifically to dhabas (roadside eateries), restaurants, industrial canteens, and migrant workers.

Appeal to Avoid Rumors and Exercise Restraint

The Ministry of Petroleum has issued a clear appeal to the general public not to give credence to any kind of rumors. Most retail outlets are functioning normally. The Joint Secretary has urged citizens to consume petrol and diesel strictly according to their actual requirements and to refrain from panic buying.
