External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday assured Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa of India's continued cooperation in dealing with the grave economic crisis in the country. This is the first news in today's press review.
According to the news of the English newspaper Hindustan Times, Jaishankar has given this assurance to the neighboring country on his three-day tour of Sri Lanka. Jaishankar has reached Colombo to participate in the meeting of BIMSTEC, a cooperation organization of seven South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and India are members of this organization.
During this, the External Affairs Minister also met top Tamil leaders of Sri Lanka and discussed with them the aspirations of the minority community and their political empowerment.
After the decrease in foreign exchange reserves, India has given financial assistance of about 1.5 billion US dollars to deal with the economic troubles in Sri Lanka and rising fuel prices.
In the meeting with the President of Sri Lanka, Jaishankar reviewed the bilateral relations. After the meeting, Jaishankar tweeted, "Assured him of continued cooperation from India."
Gotabaya Rajapaksa thanked India for the help.
During a meeting with Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, S. Jaishankar virtually inaugurated the Jaffna Cultural Center built by India. The leaders of both countries also signed an agreement supporting Buddhist culture and heritage during this period.
s. Jaishankar also held talks with Sri Lanka's Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Basil is in constant contact with India to deal with the economic crisis.
The newspaper quoted some reports as saying that Sri Lanka has asked for a loan of $ 1 billion from India.
After meeting Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Jaishankar tweeted, "Discussed the economic situation in Sri Lanka and India's supportive response. We will continue to follow our Neighborhood First policy."
Due to the ever-deepening economic crisis and rising prices of essential goods in Sri Lanka, nationwide protests have started. After the fuel shortage, Jaishankar also visited Lanka IOC, which is a local subsidiary of Indian Oil, on this tour.
Jaishankar on Monday held separate meetings with the leaders of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA). Jaishankar has met Tamil leaders at a time when the Sri Lankan President has sought the cooperation of minorities to rebuild the nation for the first time after two years of taking office.
India continues to pressurize the Sri Lankan government to amend the constitution to give more rights to the Tamil minorities. Sri Lanka has indicated that the issues of Tamils will also be addressed in the new constitution.
