Nearly a third of Pakistan has been submerged in floods. More than a thousand people have died and a population of three crores has been affected. Lakhs of houses were washed away and many became homeless. The Government of Pakistan has brought the army to the ground for relief and rescue. The parts of Sindh, Khyber, and Punjab are said to be the most affected. According to a report in The Indian Express, the Indian government is in talks at the highest level to help Pakistan. However, no decision has been taken yet.
There are media reports that Pakistan has not yet officially approached India for help, although one of its ministers has reportedly said that Islamabad may consider importing food items from India. Apart from providing aid to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster in Pakistan.
In a previous tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Saddened to see the devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, injured and all those affected by this natural calamity and look forward to a speedy restoration of normalcy." Huh."
Inflation hit amid floods
The floods in Pakistan have made inflation worse. Due to this, there has been a rapid increase in the prices of essential commodities like vegetables, fruits, etc. in Pakistan. According to Pakistan media reports, Finance Minister Mifta Ismail has said that the government may "consider importing vegetables and other food items from India" as the floods have damaged crops across the country.
As AFP reported, Ismail told broadcaster Geo News, "We need to consider bringing some vegetables to the land border. We have to do this because we are facing an unexpected shortage of vegetables and rising prices." Inflation has broken the back of the people."
Earlier, India had helped Pakistan during the 2010 floods and the 2005 earthquake.
