India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had said in an interview – Gone are the days when the world used to tell about us and we used to take permission from it. India has always been in favor of a world where countries can select their policies, interests, and priorities.
India's view on the Russia-Ukraine war is also similar. India's stand on this war which started on 24 February has always been neutral. India also rejected US and European pressure to speak out against the Russian attack at the United Nations (UN). Not only this, but after this, it made Russia its biggest oil supplier. It was a kind of mirror to the West. India answered every question raised on it in a lofty manner.
However, Jaishankar says that he wants to see a rule-based world. He had said – I want to see a rule-based world right now. But when people try to suppress you and compromise your interests in the name of a rule-based world, then it becomes necessary to fight back.
In other words, India with a population of 140 crores needs a lot of oil, this need is being fulfilled by Russia. Russia is supplying oil at a cheap price. This need of India cannot be compromised. Therefore, from time to time, India reprimands Western and European countries who question India-Russia relations. That's why Jaishankar clearly said - Europe's problem is the world's problem, but the mentality that the world's problem is not Europe's problem should be abandoned.
Western countries imposed many sanctions on Russia after the attack on Ukraine. Due to this, energy, food, fuel, and fertilizer became costlier and the economic crisis of poor countries deepened. In other words, Asian and African countries are bearing the brunt of the displeasure of America and Europe.
In April, S Jaishankar was questioned in the US on India's purchase of oil from Russia. In response, Jaishankar said that Europe buys more oil from Russia in an afternoon than India buys from Russia in a month.
He had said- If you want to talk about India's energy purchase from Russia, then I suggest that you should look at Europe. We import a small amount of energy from there which is necessary for our energy security. But look at the statistics, Europe buys more oil in one afternoon than we buy from Russia in a month.
India, since independence in 1947, appears to be standing at a crossroads between democracy and PM Modi's style of governance. However, the popularity of Prime Minister Modi has not decreased. Many believe that India is too large and diverse to bow to any single nationalist dictate.
India probably did not have that much importance on the world map before the Russia-Ukraine war. But now India has that power, which can bend even the forces of oppression, which were rarely thought of before.
If we look at the Russia-Ukraine war and Kovid-19 together, India's approach is visible. With cooperation, they made the global chain less risky than before. People came out of the shadow of the surveillance state i.e. surveillance country China and started leaning towards India. The global economy suffered setbacks due to war and Covid, but it did not affect India. The reason is also clear that its domestic market is very strong. There is a very good balance of demand and supply here. These factors will make India the third largest economy in the world after America and China by 2030.
