A long-stalled trade agreement between India and the United States has been finalized. President Trump announced this after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Modi. However, the opposition is continuously questioning the trade deal, asking how the opening of the agricultural sector will ensure the "protection of farmers." Now, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has issued a statement on the matter.
Indian Farmers' Interests Fully Protected: Agriculture Minister
Speaking to news agency ANI about the India-US trade agreement and responding to a post by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, he said, "Our minister Piyush Goyal has also clarified the entire situation in Parliament. I reiterate that the interests of Indian farmers are completely protected. Whether they are small farmers or large farmers, all our agricultural products will remain safe. The market has not been opened for anything that would harm them."
Regarding the impact of the US-India trade agreement on India's agricultural sector, especially farmers, Shivraj Singh Chouhan further said, "This trade agreement is a new example of diplomacy, development, and respect. We believe in balanced dialogue, not conflict. The interests of farmers have been fully protected. The interests of farmers are completely safe."
Accusations of Spreading Misinformation Against the Opposition
He further added, "Our main grains, fruits, major crops, and millets are all safe. Dairy products are safe." The Agriculture Minister targeted the Congress and other opposition parties, accusing them of spreading misinformation and engaging in "blind opposition." He said that rumors were spread to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and chaos. The Agriculture Minister said in his statement that the Congress and the opposition are frustrated and mentally disturbed. They cannot compete fairly. Therefore, they are resorting to blind opposition. They want to create an atmosphere of anarchy by spreading rumors. When textile exports increase, cotton farmers will benefit."
Shivraj on the Rahul Gandhi-Bittu Controversy
Regarding the altercation between Rahul Gandhi and a Union Minister at the Makar Dwar of Parliament the previous day, Wednesday (February 4), Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "Today my heart is filled with pain and anguish." I am shocked to see that the Leader of the Opposition (Rahul Gandhi) is calling a minister a "traitor" and making such petty remarks. He is insulting the office of the Prime Minister. This is utterly disgraceful. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party have tarnished democracy. The entire country is watching. Whenever Congress has insulted the Prime Minister, the public has always taught them a lesson. How low will Congress stoop?
