In the IPL 2026 season, the decision by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant to open the innings against the Delhi Capitals became a major talking point. Pant, who typically bats in the middle order, explicitly stated after the match that this move was part of a deliberate strategy. Pant remarked, “This decision was not sudden; rather, it was part of a well-thought-out strategy. We wanted Nicholas Pooran to play an aggressive role during the middle overs.”
The Left-Right Combination Strategy
Elaborating on his strategy, Pant explained that the team aimed to disrupt the opposition’s bowling plans by utilizing a left-right batting combination; specifically, the objective was to neutralize the impact of left-arm spinners like Axar Patel. He stated, “We wanted to maintain a left-right combination so that the opposition couldn’t deploy their spinners with ease. However, I got out at an inopportune moment, which prevented the plan from being fully executed.”
Batting Collapse: Lucknow Restricted to 141
Playing on their home ground, the Lucknow team was restricted to a total of just 141 runs. Captain Pant himself failed to play a substantial innings, getting dismissed after scoring only seven runs off nine deliveries. Chasing the target, the Delhi Capitals secured a six-wicket victory in 17.1 overs, despite suffering some early setbacks.
‘Extras Were a Major Cause of Defeat’
Following the match, Pant identified the concession of “extras” as a primary reason for the defeat. Lucknow conceded a total of 20 extra runs, which included 16 wides. Pant observed, “When you score only 140 runs, you have to work much harder. If the opposing team simply plays a standard game of cricket, they are bound to win.” He further added, “Had we managed to pick up a couple more wickets during the Powerplay, we could have successfully built pressure on the opposition.”
Pitch Offered Assistance to Bowlers; Batters Failed to Capitalize
Pant acknowledged that the pitch was offering assistance to the bowlers during the initial stages of the innings, but admitted that the team’s batters failed to capitalize on those conditions. He said, “The new ball was offering assistance, but we couldn’t build a substantial partnership. When runs are scarce, you have to make some unconventional decisions.”
Pant Could Continue to Open
Pant hinted that he might be seen playing in the top order in the upcoming matches as well. However, this experiment did not prove successful for the team in the first match. Lucknow is now set to play its next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where the team will look to make a comeback.
