On friday, Senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur said Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has threatened him to “mend ways” or face a repeat of an incident in 2006 when he was reportedly assaulted by a party MLA and his supporters. The ruling party, however, brushed aside the allegation.

Amitabh Thakur and his wife Nutan Thakur have been at loggerheads with the UP government over its functioning, released an audio tape purportedly containing the voice of the SP chief.

Nutan Thakur told reporters that the clip is a recording of a call that her husband received at 4:43 pm. Towards the end of the clip, a voice, purportedly of Mulayam, can be heard saying: “Ab aap sudhar jaiye, itta he keh diya maine (now you must mend your ways, I’ve told you as much,".

The voice starts talking about a “dawat (feast) in Jasrana” and how he “saved” Thakur. The caller is heard saying, “Humne bachaya tumhe pitne se, sab maarna chahte the (I saved you from being beaten up, everyone wanted to thrash you).”

Thakur told to the media that it was a “dhamki”. “I was criminally assaulted in Jasrana (in 2006 Amitabh was SP of Firozabad where the incident occurred) and now Mulayam is saying it’ll be worse this time. I will take this truth to all senior officers, including the Chief Secretary, and will fax a letter to the Home Ministry. I will stay here… won’t run away,” he said. State spokesperson of Samajwadi Party and cabinet minister in Akhilesh Yadav’s government, Rajendra Choudhary feigned ignorance about the issue. “I can speak on this only after confirming it tomorrow,”.
