Iran has been severely punished for brutally suppressing anti-hijab protests. On Wednesday, she was fired from a UN commission for women. Citing the violation of women's rights, America presented a resolution against Iran in the UN's Economic and Social Council.
It recommended that Iran should be removed from the UN Women's Commission. The Council, consisting of 54 countries, voted on this proposal, which was supported by 29 countries, while 8 countries, including Russia, voted against the proposal. Whereas 16 countries including India remained absent.
America said Iran is a blot on UN Women's Commission
Before voting on the proposal in the Economic and Social Council, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas said that Iran is a stain on the credibility of the Women's Commission, and it would be right to remove it from the commission. While Iran's ambassador to the UN, Aamir Sayed Irawani, has termed this decision taken under the leadership of America as illegal.
Russia supported Iran
While India abstained from voting on this resolution brought against Iran, Russia has strongly opposed it. The ambassador of Russia also called it illegal. Russia said that before removing Iran from this commission, the opinion of the UN legal expert should have been taken.
UN Women's Commission was formed in 1946
This commission was formed in the year 1946 regarding the rights of women. Its main work is to promote gender equality and women empowerment. This commission holds a meeting every year in March in which issues related to women's rights are discussed all over the world.
450 people have died in anti-hijab protests so far
