Amid growing concern over the human rights situation in Afghanistan, Taliban supreme leader Mawlawi Hebatullah Akhundzada has ordered judges to fully apply Islamic law.
It is the first time a Taliban leader has issued a formal order to fully implement all aspects of Islamic law across the country since the Islamic group came to power.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Haibatullah Akhundzada gave the order after meeting a group of judges. The judges' meeting also ordered that cases of thieves, kidnappers, and traitors be investigated. A Taliban spokesman said the order from the leader of the Islamic Emirate would be implemented across the country.
