This information has been given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Going back to the previous record, the highest rainfall was in July 2020 when 1,502 mm of rainfall was recorded by IMD's Santacruz observatory (representative of Mumbai's suburbs).
The IMD said that from July 1 to July 26, 2023, at 0830 am (8.30 am), Santacruz (observatory) recorded 1,433 mm. At the same time, this record of July with the highest rainfall has been broken on July 26, 2023, at 2030 (8.30 pm), the Santa Cruz Observatory has recorded a total of 1557.8 mm of rain so far.
Incessant heavy rain lashed Mumbai throughout the day, forcing the weather office to upgrade its 'orange' alert to 'red' from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon.
The red alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, is valid from 8 pm on Wednesday till noon on July 27 and covers Mumbai city and suburban areas.

Due to continuous heavy rains in Mumbai, the devastation is not taking the name of stopping. At the same time, the IMD has declared a red alert today i.e. 27 July 2023, Thursday. Given this, all educational institutes have been closed. Schools in Mumbai will remain closed today and the University of Mumbai has postponed the semester examinations. 15-semester exams to be held today have been postponed.
