Indian-American Jewish leader Nissim Rubin has said that the Jewish community is grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his statement supporting Israel after the Hamas attack. Jewish leader Nissim Rubin has thanked PM Modi for India's support within hours of the October 7 attacks.
Speaking to PTI, Rubin, assistant director of the Asia Pacific Institute of the Washington DC-based American Jewish Committee, said the Indian Jewish community in Israel, like other residents of the country, has been 'severely affected' by the brutal attack by Hamas. More than 1,300 people have been killed in Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7.
PM Modi came openly with Israel
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 10 told his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu that the people of India stand firmly with his country in this difficult time. They strongly and unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
Rubin, who has been working in Washington DC for the last 20 years, said, 'I am an Indian Jew. I am originally from Ahmedabad, but most of my family lives in Israel. His work focuses on building the US-Israel partnership. "We lost a young female Jewish soldier of Indian origin who died in a shootout with terrorists on October 7, the first day of the attacks," he said, citing the sufferings of the Indian Jewish community in the war-torn country.
Death of two female security officers of Indian origin
At least two Indian-origin Israeli female security officers were killed in an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, official sources and community members confirmed on Sunday.
Rubin said, 'Israel always stands with India. Even when there were low-level diplomatic relations, Israel came to India's aid in the wars of 1965, 1962, 1971, and especially in Kargil in 1999. At that time Israel provided much needed defense supplies at short notice. Rubin further said, today we are seeing that this support is being repaid many times over by the people of India with strong support and understanding of Israel's position.
He said, 'We are very grateful to Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar for starting 'Operation Ajeya'. Through this Indian students and IT professionals were brought back to India from Israel. There are 90,000 Jews of Indian origin. 30,000 Indian citizens are mostly working as caregivers.
'We have not heard of any of them leaving their jobs and going back to India because they are a very important part of Israeli society and take care of the elderly and disabled people,' the Jewish leader said.
He said, 'Even for the students who stayed in Israel, their professors and their college mates were regularly thinking about their well-being and providing all possible help.'
Rubin said, 'As an Indian American and a Jew, we have been very troubled for the last eight days. But we have great expectations from the US-Israel-India partnership. Let us not forget that just before these attacks on the G20 IMEC, the India-Middle East Economic Corridor Agreement was signed. I2U2 was launched in 2023 at the recent general meeting. We are confident that the Middle East will move forward on the path of peace and prosperity in the future.
'It is very important to eliminate Hamas'
He said, 'One thing is for sure we will have to get rid of Hamas. We need to get rid of Pakistan-based terrorist organizations like Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Rubin said that the most important factor in this scenario is the coordination of the US and India with each other regarding matters related to the Middle East. IMEC was thus signed, raising hopes of expanded economic opportunities for the region and beyond. India, America, and Israel can work together to ensure peace through security. Without security, there will be no peace.
He said that the second most important factor is that India and America are common partners in the Middle East. We have to understand that after the United States, India has the closest relations with all the Gulf countries, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Both countries working together as these close allies will bring about a stable situation in the conflict.
