The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala has strongly condemned the sacrifice of two women. He demanded from his government to make strict laws to stop superstition and witchcraft and to strictly follow the existing law.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CPI(M) said the sacrificial incident has shocked everyone. Such incidents can be stopped not only by law but by mass movements and awareness in society. The statement was issued by the party's state secretariat. The brutal murder of two women due to witchcraft took place at Elanthur in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. This has exposed the superstition prevailing in the state. This has created the need for a bigger fight against this evil.
73 murders in the country due to superstition
Citing National Crime Records Bureau data, the ruling Left party said last year there were 73 murders in the country only because of superstition. The party statement said that no one would have thought that such a situation would arise in a state like Kerala. The party strongly condemns this incident, it shook the human conscience. The CPI(M) said that apart from strictly implementing the existing laws, a new law should also be considered if necessary.
Silence on the accused's relation with CPI(M)
However, the CPI(M) state secretariat kept silent on the opposition's allegation of alleged links with the ruling party of Bhagwat Singh, the second accused in the sacrificial-cum-murder case. The Congress and the BJP had accused the accused of being active CPI(M) workers and had put up several Facebook posts supporting Left leaders and ministers.
Congress also demanded stricter law
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly V D Satheesan has also advocated for a stringent law to check the menace of superstitions and customs. We will urge Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to consider a bill for this and pass it in the next assembly session itself, he said on Wednesday evening.
Link of one accused with radical groups: BJP
On the other hand, Kerala BJP President K Surendran has reiterated the allegation. He again said that one of the accused in the Bali case has links with radical groups. His terrorist links should be probed.
