Argentine legend Lionel Messi suffered a defeat in his farewell match for Paris Saint Germain (PSG). PSG, already assured of the French Football League title, lost 2-3 to Clermont. The PSG supporters showed no respect for Messi and the audience 'hooted' when the announcer announced the star player's name.

A few minutes later, Messi entered the field with his three children smiling. Johan Gastien (24th minute), Mehdi (45th), and Grajon (63rd) scored for Clermont, and Sergio Ramos (16th), and Kylian Mbappe (21st minute, penalty) scored for PSG.

Messi was given a pass by Embappé in the 54th minute but missed his target. The goalkeeper then made a good save on one of his free kicks in the last minute. After the final whistle, Messi hugged and waved to his teammates and Clermont players as he left the field.

Possibility of playing with a Saudi Arabian club

PSG won the French League and the French Champions Trophy twice in these two seasons under Messi. Messi meanwhile has scored 32 goals and assisted 35 goals in all competitions for the club. A week earlier, Messi's goal had helped PSG win their 11th French league title in a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg.

It was his 496th club goal in Europe's top five leagues and broke Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo's record. The World Cup-winning Argentine captain has not extended his contract with PSG. He is now likely to play in Saudi Arabia, where he can get paid more than Ronaldo.

Messi scored 32 goals for the team while at the PSG club. After the match, Messi said- I express my gratitude to the club, the city of Paris, and its people for these two years. I wish you all the best for the future.

Mbappe won the Golden Boot award for the fifth time in a row with his 29th goal.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe won the French Golden Boot award for a record fifth consecutive time in the French league. He scored a goal in the club's final match against Clermont, in a 2–3 defeat. This took his tally of goals in the season to 29 and he was at the forefront. Before Mbappe, French legend Jean-Pierre Papin and former Argentine footballers Carlos Bianchi and Delio Onis have done so. French Open champions PSG and second-placed Lens have qualified for next season's Champions League.
